ABOUT

Hello
and greetings

My name is Cal Clements. I've lived in Athens, GA since 1968. I started in theater at the age of 11 with wonderful roles such as Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream. My favorite type of theater, however, is that which we call Clown. I like physical comedy, stillness, mystery, discovered games, and playful mischievousness.

Here's a really fast autobiography: I did a lot of theater as a child, I joined the Navy (not that fun), I went to art school (very fun), I ended up as an English major. After undergrad, I taught myself the saxophone and lived as a bohemian in a treehouse. I went back to school and earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. I moved to California and became a librarian. I moved back to Georgia and made art. I opened a yoga studio called Rubber Soul and, in that space, produced many comic plays. My clown troupes were called The Terrible Tuba Band, The Sacred Pudding Society, The Extravagant Extravaganza, Silencio, The Thunder Dreamers, and The Flamboyance of Flamingos. I also trained yoga teachers, drove an 18-wheeler across the country, drove my vintage motor home to Mexico and back, and made cute ceramic art. Ok, so that's my overall story.

There are three photographs in the gallery (above).

The first is me in my vintage motorhome, the 1976 Argosy, which I have named, "The Magic Bus aka The Soot Monster."

The second is of students from the past, when I had a yoga studio called "Rubber Soul Yoga Revolution." It ran successfully for 12 years and closed in 2018.

The third is of my guru, Jeremy Ayers. I began yoga because of him and modeled my life after his. Jeremy loved clowns. He passed from this world in 2016 but lives on in my heart.

Below I've put a link to some of my heroes--Rimski and Handkerchief, who play large mobile instruments in England.
